Cute Story

We enjoyed this particular article as I am sure we have all heard from friends or online about great success stories investing in crypto, NFT's, marijuana stock. The article goes on to explain how you are not often hearing the full story.

Jerry has often echoed the statement in the article (quoted below).

In fact, every “successful” person I know can point to two or three life-changing events that simply boiled down to flat-out-bald-faced-dumb-luck.

Looking back in hindsight everyone has a few proverbial "y's in the road", that are life changing events. At the time, the most important ones may not seem very important and the not so important events may feel extremely important in the moment.

At Philotimo, we don't have a cute story. Our true story begins with Jerry and CJ meeting through a pick up hockey game when CJ was attending the University of Guelph in 2006 and Jerry was running the league. We spent too many nights and early mornings bantering about sports, current events and life. We stayed in contact, mostly through the odd game of hockey. We never thought years later, our paths would cross and the opportunity would arise to work together and continue building a successful business helping clients navigate through their own "y's in the road".

See below for a few more of our favourite quotes from the article.

“I started investing with $1. One year later, I’m up to $500k! Stories like these always make the path to success look like a hockey stick. “It was all up and to the right. That was my strategy. It was in my pitch deck.”
The problem with these cute stories is that people actually believe them. They even try to follow the same steps to achieve the same results. Guess what—they don’t achieve those results. And then—what’s worse—they end up blaming themselves.
